The dirty dirt on blackheads
Learn how blackheads develop and how to treat them with our go-to clearing products.
What exactly is a blackhead?
Blackheads form when hair follicles get clogged with dead skin cells, oil, and/or bacteria, causing non-inflammatory acne lesions to develop. That’s why they often look dark and clogged.
Am I susceptible to getting blackheads?
Anyone can get blackheads because they can form on any skin type or condition. However, people with oily, acne-prone, and sensitive skin are more likely to develop blackheads; their skin produces more oil or has a high reactivity rate, which creates a greater chance of follicles clogging and lesions forming. Most people see blackheads in areas with large, active oil glands such as the nose and chin.
I got a blackhead, what do I do now?
First, get rid of the buildup that caused the blackhead. After a double cleanse clears away surface dirt, use an exfoliant for a deeper clean. Our iconic exfoliants are formulated with Beta Hydroxy Acids and Glycolic Acid to penetrate below the skin’s surface to break up blackheads where they form.
For an even deeper clean, reach for a decongesting treatment like our Sebum Clearing Masque. This occasional treatment thoroughly cleans out excess sebum to rebalance overactive skin.
After cleansing, replenish skin to prevent new blackheads from forming. Applying a daily antibacterial booster or serum like Age Bright Clearing Serum helps get rid of breakout-causing bacteria before they cause blackheads. Ingredients like Salicylic Acid, Azelaic Acid, Thymol with Terpineol, and Benzoyl Peroxide are common antibacterial agents that should be added to any acne treatment routine.
Finally, add some moisture to your skin to lock in the treatment. It’s a common misconception that oily skin doesn’t need a moisturizer, but this can actually cause more oil to form. As your skin lacks the water-based hydration from a moisturizer, it will produce more oily to compensate–leading to a higher potential for blackheads. Find a moisturizer that has the texture and finish you prefer so you can wear it comfortably day and night.
